Introducing the 1st Annual
Luna Nova Film Exchange

Host an event that will appeal to art, media, technology and music students alike! Make this an opportunity to discuss interdisciplinary collaboration on your campus. Get students and faculty excited about collaborating and using technology to create multimedia works!

James Carlson,
Editor

Since its beginning in 2002, the Luna Nova New-Music Ensemble (www.lunanova.org) has given over fifty concerts of contemporary music in colleges and art museums around the country. Ensemble members have also worked closely with student composers giving master classes and readings of new works, as well as making recordings of selected student compositions. Recently, Luna Nova has begun to collaborate with visual artists to create multimedia projects that involve either live performance with video or using Luna Nova recordings as soundtracks for new video works. Several of their collaborative projects with artists and composers have resulted in compelling multimedia works that have been performed in various concerts and conferences.

We are designing a program that will encourage college students and faculty to collaborate on the creation of multimedia projects and to give them a chance to have their work screened in multiple venues.

Here’s how it works:
It is easy to host the Luna Nova Film Exchange at your institution. Contact us to request a set of festival DVDs for preview. Choose a time that will be good for your audience, reserve a theater or media classroom on your campus and advertise the event to your community. The DVDs will be accompanied by promotional material for your event, including a poster template that can be photocopied or printed and a press release. You will also receive a .pdf of a program that includes detailed information about the films, the creators and the technology used in the creative process.

You and your colleagues may lead the discussion at the presentation, or you may choose to bring in one or two of the creators of the films to attend the screening and to discuss their work with audience members. If you would like to fund the visit of one of the film’s creators to your school, we will be happy to help coordinate these logistics.

Costs:
Ultimately, the host institution can host the LNFE at minimum expense. There is no fee for hosting the festival; the creators of the films have all given their permission screen these films for free as part of this festival. The host institution or department is simply requested to cover any additional costs, such as the printing of promotional materials and program, venue fees, paid advertising, etc. If the host institution wishes to invite one of the Luna Nova guest presenters those costs will include travel expenses and a reasonable speaker’s fee.

Submissions (another reason to become a host!):
Luna Nova presents six concerts at the annual Belvedere Chamber Music Festival (www.belvederefestival.org) held each June in Memphis, TN. Students and faculty from the host institutions will be eligible to submit films to be considered by our editorial board for inclusion at future LNFE Festival events. Film creators also have permission to use more than sixty Luna Nova recordings as a resource for their media works. These include masterworks of the 20th century and newly composed works. (Visit www.lunanova.org to hear complete recordings.) The selection process for projects to be programmed will be overseen by the Editorial Board. Films should be submitted as a DVD and should be 20 minutes or less in length.
